's bring in barbara starr at the pentagon for more on this potential chuck hagel nomination. we don't know if he'll be nominated yet. barbara, what are the attacks against hagel? >> classic washington trial balloon. the nomination isn't out, nomination hasn't been made, but the pins are sticking in that trial balloon. first, senator hagel apologized for comments he made back around 1997, 1998 when there was a man who was openly gay about to become an ambassador, hagel opposed all of that, made some comments about gay people. now he says all these years later he regrets it, it is not what he believes. and by all accounts members of those who represent pro gay rights movements in washington have accepted senator hagel's apology on that. item number two, a lot of questions about whether hagel is tough enough on iran. did he cast some votes in the senate that did not support sanctions against iran? number three, israel. this may be the one that gets the most traction and already has, in fact. a lot of pro israeli groups are saying that senator hagel simply isn't supportive enough of israel. be

who are very upset with the cuts that would hit the pentagon. it may be difficult to rally republican votes of the cannot turn off the sequester. on the democratic side, the estate tax could be a problem. the republicans are insistent that the estate tax stay at current levels, which is exempting the state of $55 million at a relatively late 35% above that level. many democrats would like to see -- in january it is expected to come -- taxes are expected to go up dramatically. as small as $1 million would be taxed. most democrats want to see something in the metal. they are adamant that we cannot exempt states as large as $5 million. that could be another sticking point. >> do we expect anything going on today? if not, what is the earliest of the senators will come back in for session tomorrow? caller: i think the senate is due back in at 1:00. the house is due at 6:30. the house is the big question mark here. it is very difficult to imagine what could pass the house. as for today, that is an excellent question. the senate is not in here the house is not an. my understanding as we are

at the pentagon. barbara, there's outrage from a lot of folks about this. the nra came out pretty strong about arming the schools. is there any kind of middle ground here from those who say, look, we want to stop gun violence, but there has to be a better way to protect the children? >> the nra didn't double down on what it wants, which is a focus on armed security personnel in schools. what other people say, suzanne, is, look, that's not a new idea. school districts have grappled with security for years, and some have gone this way. even in the 1999 terrible massacre at columbine high school in colorado, there was an armed security person on the school grounds at that time. it helped a little bit, but obviously, not able to stop what happened there. the people who want to see another way to go, many in congress are talking about a package of solutions. some new measures on gun control. some new measures on high-powered magazines. taking another look the at school safety. taking a look at how this country deals with with those who are mentally ill. this package of solutions they say that the p

anyone really believe there is not a single dollar to be saved anywhere in the pentagon? the american people have spoken. they have made it loud and clear they want a balanced approach that casts the wealthiest americans to pay a little bit more. it protect our seniors, children, and our most vulnerable neighbors. the republican leaders refuse to listen. let me say another thing. i would say my republican freshman colleague -- i remember the promises of things you said would change. i would say, you own this now. you have officially become part of the problem, if not the problem. it is a vote against accountability. let me say this, my republican friends have made it on fashionable to worry about the poor and the elderly and the vulnerable. i urge my colleagues not to turn your backs on the most needy. let's balance our budget in a way that does not lower the quality of life or decrease the standard of living. we can do so much better. instead of doing this, you should be negotiating with the president. go back to the negotiating president and stop the game. >> i yield 5 minutes to my
